12 Tips for Decorating any Room

Decorating doesn’t follow any hard and fast rules, you can explore, dream and get inspired where you will.  Be as creative as you like and follow your intuition.  However if you don’t happen to trust your intuition there are some guidelines you can follow that won’t steer you wrong.  Here are 12 tips for decorating any room and get it right every time.

Here are 12 tips for decorating any room:

  1. Leave space around your furniture, be able to move around your room easily, it’s not an obstacle course. Get fewer pieces but opt for those that are well made and elegant.
  2. Hang artwork at eye level, art is meant to be hung where the eye can see it and not 8 feet in the air and over your head. Hang your art, roughly 5 feet from the floor.  Here is a video showing you how to properly hang pictures.

  1. Get rid of the art or knick knacks that don’t blend with the room
  2. Create a focal point in the room and work from there, keep all the other items secondary so you don’t end up with a cluttered room.
  3. When picking your focal point make sure it is within the line of sight of the other rooms. The best place to stage a focal point is across from the entrance to the room.
  4. Don’t make everything match, things should work together but not be too monochromatic or theme-y.
  5. Learn how to place an area rug and arrange furniture on top of it. You can put furniture legs on area rugs and it makes your room look good, however leave at least 18 inches of floor surface around the border of the rug.
  6. Vary the scale and proportion of the items in the room, bear in mind when you are buying furniture that what looks good in the store may not work inside your home.
  7. Use light strategically, add light at different levels to create layers. Lower lighting can change the ambience of the room entirely.
  8. Select your paint color after you have picked the furniture and decorative items. There are tons of paint shades to choose from and it’s easier to find the right color after the room is set up.
  9. Be bold in your choices. Don’t be afraid of bold colors and making a statement, choose unusual pieces of art and make them work for you. Let your personality shine through in how you decorate the room.
  10. Let creativity rule the day, having a few guidelines is a good place to start from but find things that are personal, that are comfortable and bring you pleasure.
Picking the Perfect Window Treatments

Picking the Perfect Window Treatments

Many of you are here because we share a common love of decorating and interior design.  Design is exciting, you can instantly change the look of your room and the energy becomes different too.  Most of us start decorating by simply moving the furniture, putting on some fresh paint and finding some artwork to personalize the space.  However a quick and easy way to change the look of the room is to change the window treatments.  Here are some ideas for picking the perfect window treatments.

Kids Bedroom

In the kid’s rooms you should start out with some blackout curtains, especially for younger kids.  In the summertime when the sun is still out long after bedtime it can make falling asleep hard for children.  You can get some blackout curtains in a contemporary styles that work for both girls and boys and they will block out the light.

Adult Rooms

There are endless options for window treatments in your room or a spare bedroom.  You can add elements of romance with silk curtains, adding elegance to the room.  You can go practical with blinds, or use some linen curtains that give a casual and relaxed atmosphere.  You can get any of these options in blackout curtains if light will keep you awake.

Living Room

The living room is where you want to go high end.  Splurge and get yourself some custom made curtains, make sure you measure to get the proper length and width for the room.  Properly hung curtains can make your room look bigger.  In the living room  you can add silk or velvet, you can add tassels or some other trim to make your curtains pop.  Layering curtains with a set of sheers looks stylish, but if your living room is where the family gathers frequently and you have little hands touching them, washable cotton might be a better choice.

Kitchen

Two things to keep in mind when selecting window treatments for the kitchen, first they need to be out of the way.  Kitchen curtains or blinds should not touch counter tops or appliances and be out of the way of kitchen messes.  The second thing to keep in mind is you should have plenty of natural light in the kitchen.  Use sheers, valances or roman shades, they look great and are functional.

Next time you feel like changing the look of your rooms, start with the curtains.  You can use colors to complement the décor or they can be the focal point of the room.  It’s also far less expensive than buying new furniture.
